Further Update on the Ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury

As  advised  in  G/TBT/N/AUS/134/Add.1,  Rules  made  under  the  Recycling  and  Waste Reduction  Act  2020  prohibit  the  manufacture,  import  and  export  of certain  mercury-containing products in Australia.

The Recycling and Waste Reduction (Mandatory Product Stewardship –Mercury-added Products)  Rules  2021  (the  Rules)  will  incorporate  changes  made  to  Annex  A  of  the Minamata Convention on Mercury. The Rules, which came into force on 7 March 2022, prohibit the manufacture, import and export of products containing mercury, with some exemptions for essential products.The Fourth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention (21 to 25 March 2022), made  amendments  to  prohibit  the  manufacture,  import  and  export  of  the  following products from 31 December 2025:

•  Compact  fluorescent  lamps  with  an  integrated  ballast  (CFL.i)  for  general  lighting purposes that are ≤ 30 watts with a mercury content not exceeding 5 mgper  lamp burner.

• Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) and external electrode fluorescent lamps (EEFL) of all lengths for electronic displays.

• Strain gauges to be used in plethysmographs

• The following electrical and electronic measuring devices, except  those  installed  in large-scale equipment or those used for high precision measurement, where no suitable mercury free alternative is available:(a) Melt pressure transducers, melt pressure transmitters and melt pressure sensors.

• Mercury vacuum pumps.

• Tyre balancers and wheel weights.• Photographic film and paper.

• Propellant for satellites and spacecraft.New deadline for comments (if applicable)
